How Do Essential Oils Work? Essential oils affect the human body in different ways. When a person inhales the scent of essential oils, its airborne molecules will reach the olfactory system. The olfactory system, also known as our “sense of smell”, is made up of different cells that relate to many parts of the human body’s sensory system. The airborne odor molecules inhaled from essential oils may also reach the lungs thus affecting the respiratory system. 8 However, how do these odor molecules travel to the different parts of the body? This is made possible by our body’s receptor sites in the limbic system. Experts also refer to the limbic system as the “emotional brain”.
